ARTIST STATEMENT
My new work in experimental animation is an exploration of dreams, fantasy, memories, symbols, personal myths and narratives. New to the medium, I have worked primarily in the past with printmaking, painting, drawing and textiles. I took my first animation class in 2006 at Harvard University (as a grad student in the Arts and Education program) studying under the English animator Ruth Lingford. The freedom and freshness of the medium seduced me. I have been creating various short pieces and experiments since then.
My work combines the use of performance, shadow puppetry, cut-paper, small-scale sculpture, set design, installation, costume design, puppetry, drawing, painting, stop-motion and pixillation animation/video. Through animation/video I synthesize these various mediums.
I use sculpture/drawing/painting as branches of the time and space of the video to reveal the before/after--inside/outside that a video cannot show. This extension is part of the internal logic and structure of my work.

About Me

- I’m a bower bird, a harvester of the world around me. I collect stories, dreams, memories, and profound experiences. Through experimental animation I explore cycles of life, realms of consciousness, and create new myths. I see my work existing in the in the flicker of your eye, in the darkened cave, on gallery walls and in subversive places. Currently I'm an MFA student in Experimental Animation at Calarts. I'm working on “Phosphena,” a cut-paper stop-motion animation exploring the layers of consciousness connecting dreams, memories and death. Combining low and hi-tech experimental approaches to installation, projection, and puppetry along with compositing in After-Effects. I'm creating a large installation to view the animation involving photograms, a dream party, and the creation of a large human-sized bower to experience the animation. "I am for an art that takes its form from the lines of life itself, that twists and extends and accumulates and spits and drips, and is heavy and coarse and blunt and sweet and stupid as life itself. I am for an art that comes out of a chimney like black hair and scatters in the sky."--Claes Oldenburg
